Our oldest turned 5 this week! I can't believe he's almost in school! We had Kindergarten orientation just a few weeks ago and it made me realize just how old he really is. Whenever I talk to another mom about school, they always tell me that once your kids are in school, your whole life changes. So, I guess we'd better make the most of this Spring and Summer before we're completely stuck on the school schedule!
Speaking of Spring, what a great way to kick it off each year with David's birthday?!
In the morning David had joy school. I had him go to that even though it was his birthday, because in all honesty his favorite thing to do is to play with friends... So, this was actually a perfect "birthday" activity.
After joy school, John picked David up during his lunch break and took him to get a happy meal! It was John's idea and David had a lot of fun!
So, while David was busy for pretty much the whole morning, I was working on his cake while watching Brooke and two of my sister's kids. My nephew ended up pushing a chair to the counter and secretly eating about a third of one of the cake layers while it was cooling... and he's the one that's not aloud to have sugar... Oops. Haha! I ended up making another cake mix to make up for the layer that got eaten and the cake ended up being waaay too big! Another Oops...
Once the cake was done, I started on David's birthday dinner. Growing up, my parents would let us choose what we had for dinner on the night of our birthday. The only condition was that it had to be something we could make at home, so no fast food. I've continued that tradition with my own family since it seems like a fun way to make their day a little more special. And why not let them choose since we have to have dinner anyway.
This year, when I asked David what he wanted, he said Hootenanny (German pancake). I asked him a few other times just to make sure, and he was dead set on having a big plate of hootenanny with fruit and fruit dip. That seemed really random, but it's better than two years ago when he asked for nothing but toast! Hahaha!
After dinner, we had his gigantic cake and presents. Then the rest of the night was spent playing with a few of those new presents and reading the books he got.
Overall, it was a great year of being 4 and on to year #5 for this kiddo!
