Two days ago, John texted me and asked if I wanted to make a cake for his work on Friday. I haven't made a full on decorated cake in a while so the obvious answer was: YES.
By Wednesday night I had the Oreo cake baked, filled, and crumb coated, as well as the egg-less cookie dough in the freezer. Then, yesterday I baked, filled and crumb coated the cookie dough cake. By 10 pm last night, I had the chocolate drip done (although it was a little too warm/runny when I put it on) and we drove to John's work to assemble it, finish decorating it, and store it in their fridge.
Although baking cakes is not the reason I'm a stay at home mom, it definitely helps in situations like this to make sure I can get random last second things done without it being too crazy!
For this cake, I basically just followed a few recipes by Cupcake Jemma. I love a lot of her recipes! I wasn't sure how the cookie dough cake tier would turn out since I haven't tried that recipe yet, so I made the Oreo level the bigger one since I knew that one was guaranteed to be great!
Here's a list of all the videos I used from her to make this cake:
Get the "Behind the Scenes at C&D: Double-stacked Cookie Dough Oreo Cake" by clicking here.
Get the Cookie dough cupcakes (baked in 6 inch pans instead to make it a cake) recipe here.
I used her chocolate cupcake recipe as a cake and substituted water instead of coffee using the recipe here.
Oreo icing came from the recipe here. (It's the same recipe I used for my spider cake, but I just eyeballed the oreo crumbs this time and didn't really measure it).
The Chocolate Drip tutorial can be found here.
And also a special thanks to my Aunt Jodie who gave me a scale to use while baking since Jemma is in London and her recipes are mostly based on weight measurements... You can find weight to cups conversions online (which I've done in the past), but it was nice to be able to just use the scale and not have to take the time to convert everything over!
I want to try a new icing recipe for the next cake I try, but that probably won't be for a little while... Or at least that's what all the unfinished housework from the last few days tells me! Haha!
And now that that's done, on to tackle the dish washing and the disaster that is our kitchen! Hopefully I win the fight! Lol.
