Occasionally when I'm at the grocery store, I see a couple of completely random fruits that we never buy and I'm always curious about what they taste like and who actually buys them. I'm always tempted to try them, but don't really have a good excuse to buy a ton of random fruit when I don't even know if we'll like them.
Well, a while back, I hit the end of the week and realized that I didn't plan a single thing for date night. When that happened, the idea came into my head to use date night to try out all that random produce we never bother buying. And since John liked the idea too, we went with it!
And that's how Exotic Fruit Tasting became a thing.
Probably the strangest looking fruit we tried was the Kiwano fruit or "horned melon". We didn't look up any of the fruit ahead of time, so we were really surprised to see that the inside was bright green and a little similar to a pomegranate with it's small sections of fruit/juice around the seeds.
Another surprising thing about this fruit was that it had a little bit of a kiwi taste but at the same time tasted like a slightly green banana.
Unfortunately, the time of year we chose to do this date night was not the best for fruit tasting... So the other ones we tried were a mango, a pomegranate, and a mini personal watermelon. Of those three the only one we hadn't tried was the personal watermelon. Surprisingly, and somewhat not surprisingly, it tasted like a watermelon... I always thought they might not have as much flavor because they were smaller, but nope. It was about the same...
We've had pomegranates and mangoes before, but we don't typically buy them as often as we buy bananas and apples. Also, I know there are people that do typically buy these kinds of fruits, but for us it was a little different. So, if someone wants to do their own "exotic fruit tasting" night, just buy ones you don't normally get at the store.
In the end, I don't think the kiwano fruit will become a pantry staple in our house, but it was fun to try! Now back to my typical bananas and apples grocery shopping and we'll hopefully get to try a different kind of "random" fruit next time!
