One thing we did that was a little different for us this year was that we made a thankful turkey. First, we had a mini lesson with our kids about Thanksgiving and being thankful. Then, we introduced the turkey and let David name him (he chose Ben).
Every day for the next week, we each added something we are thankful for to a feather and glued it onto Ben the turkey. It was a fun way to keep the kids focused on the real reason for Thanksgiving instead of on the food. Although, in reality, neither of my kids ate much at Thanksgiving... I guess turkey and green bean casserole just isn't their forte... but pie definitely is. Lol.
For the white elephant this year, we ended up getting a bunch of plastic decorative asparagus (didn't know that was really a thing, or at least that it was called decorative...). John pulled the asparagus spears apart and the kids used them as swords and arrows... so, I wouldn't call that one all bad.
Another gift we got was a bag of random things someone was taking to D.I. Inside it had foot cream, a bar of soap, a random metal wallet, Eeyore pajama pants, a smaller bag of candy and a bunch of other random stuff. For my kids, just having candy in the bag made it a major score. Haha!
At the end, there were two extra gifts since my mother in law usually adds extras in case someone forgot to bring one. Since my kiddos were the only ones that didn't get a gift (we only brought 2 and were planning on sharing with them), they got to open these and got giraffe sunglasses and a handheld phone that plugs into a cellphone's headphone jack, which David was really excited about!
The next day, we put up our Christmas decorations and had to head back to John's parents house because I forgot my purse there with my wallet in it... Oops! Overall, Thanksgiving was great and a good reminder of all the many things we've been blessed with in our lives. God is good!
