When Brooke was almost 2, I went through the clothes I had for her and realized she needed a few dresses for church on Sundays (along with some other things). Once I had just as many clothes as I thought she would need, I found another box in our garage full of 2 year old girl clothes... And now, she has way too many clothes... something I swore would not happen, but oh well...
Before finding the mystery clothes box, I found a shirt at D.I. and thought the pattern was perfect to use for a dress for Brooke. Fortunately, this dress was super easy to make as well! All it took was a little bit of cutting, gathering, and sewing and it was done!
So here's what I did.
First, I tried the women's sized shirt on Brooke to measure where the waist would need to be and cut along that.
Next, I tried the top half on her and marked where to take in the sides. I sewed along the sides of the top half of the dress and that was done.
For the skirt, I took the rest of the fabric and sewed along the top of it without sewing backwards to set the thread. That way, I could pull on one side of the thread and gather the top of the skirt together.
(P.S. The lighting was a bit off in the second picture because I was working on that part of the project at night... one of the few times I can actually get work done without little hands getting in the way. Lol.)
I then pinned the skirt to the top and sewed them together. The last thing I did was take a needle and sew together the gaps that are in between the buttons on the skirt.
And that's it!
The only thing I would do differently has to do with how I cut the shirt in half in the first step. I didn't quite measure right so the back of the shirt was a little longer than the front at the waist, but not so much that it ruined the project. I guess John was right when he says measure twice, cut once for all of our wood projects... Also, don't try to cut the front and the back at the same time. Sometimes short cuts don't end up working out how you think they should. Haha!
