French Toast

Just like with my Aunt Viv's Sweet Potato Souffle recipe and my Mom's Chicken and Dumplings recipe, this French Toast recipe comes from a family member. However, unlike the other two recipes, it comes from someone I've never met.

Years ago, my mom's side of the family made a family cookbook. I was actually a little disappointed when I found out 15 years too late since my cousin (who was 7 at the time) had a recipe in the book and I didn't even know it existed until a few years ago. Oh well. I guess the book might be a little better off without the "cheese microwaved on a piece of bread" recipe my 8 year old self would have submitted. Lol.

This recipe just happens to be from that cookbook and came from my Great Aunt Martha who passed away before I was born. Like a lot of recipes from her generation, this one is simple but great! It's one of those recipes that doesn't need an improvement since sometimes the traditional, simple french toast recipe is the best.

To make this french toast, you first combine 3 eggs, 1/2 a cup of milk, 1 Tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, a dash of salt and a dash of cinnamon (or a few dashes if you like cinnamon like me!) in a shallow dish. I usually just use a cake pan to mix it all in.

Once the ingredients are combined to your liking, dip the bread into the mixture making sure to cover both sides.

Now, place the coated bread slices on a greased/buttered griddle or frying pan at about medium high heat and let it cook. Once it is lightly browned on the bottom, flip the bread slices over to cook the other side.

Once the slices are fried completely, place them on a plate and add your desired toppings.

My favorite is sliced strawberries with whipped cream, but sometimes I'll add other topping like bananas and pancake syrup like in the picture below. Some other toppings you could add are powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, peanut butter and syrup, or even a different flavored syrup like blueberry or blackberry. Either way, it's going to be good!

The last step, of course, is to eat up your yummy creation!
And if you spent the time to try out this recipe, well then, this plate is for you! :)
