This week John finally finished school and is done with his MBA! It has been a long 2 years of extra school and after looking back, I realized that in our 7 and 1/2 years of marriage, we've done a lot! We have 3 kids, have moved 7 times and now have a house. I got my associates and then bachelor's degrees. John got his bachelor's and then master's degrees. We've gone on fun family vacations and gotten through minor bumps in the road as well (Always wear a seat belt. Lol.).
And even though, I know we have a lot of great times (and yes, also hard times *knock on wood*) ahead of us, I thought it would be fun to look back at what happened 8 years ago today.
The day we got engaged.
At this point in mine and John's relationship, we had already talked about it and knew we wanted to get married. He had met my parents at thanksgiving and in the traditional (some would say old fashioned) way, he asked for and received my dad's approval.
With finals coming up and the end of the semester, John had already told me he probably wouldn't propose until after the Christmas break.
As a side note, do most people know this much about the timing of a proposal before actually being proposed to?... My parents hadn't even talked about marriage when my dad proposed and it caught my mom so off guard that it took her a month before she could give him her answer! Thank goodness he was patient! Haha!
Now back to the story...
John and I were going on a date just like any other date night but this time we decided to drive up to Deer Creek Reservoir. We parked and got out of the car to walk down to the lake and I could hear something in the distance but couldn't tell what it was. I thought there were people on that part of the shore so I wanted to walk to the other side. John insisted we keep going and when we got to the small boat dock, there were flower petals and little candles set up along it with a laptop playing "I See the Light" from the movie "Tangled" (we watched that movie on our first date).
At this point, I still thought it was just a normal date... I don't know if that says more about me or about John. Haha!
It wasn't until we walked onto the dock and I saw some family and friends huddled by the bushes on the shore that I realized John was going to propose! (They had gotten there to set it up for him so I wouldn't be suspicious.)
He got down on one knee and gave a short "speech" he'd practiced about how I was his new dream (a reference to "Tangled") and then asked me to marry him. Of course, I didn't even have to hesitate before telling him, "Yes!"
We then tried to send off wish lanterns but the wind that night made it impossible... and a fire hazard. Lol. Luckily, my sister had thought of this and came up with a plan B earlier using balloons tied to DIY lanterns instead.
Once we did that, John's sister's roommate took a few pictures of us because she was too excited and forgot to take them when he was actually proposing. Lol. So yeah, the proposing picture is staged. Haha!
After that, we went to Olive Garden for dinner. John knows I'm a sucker for their unlimited salad and breadsticks. Haha! Once we got back to my apartment, we decided to watch a movie. Being young, cheap college students, the only movies we had available were from my roommate. We chose one of the few we hadn't already seen together and ended up watching The Phantom of the Opera.
Randomly, one of my roommates decided to watch it with us while writing an essay on her laptop and singing along to the songs. And also while staring at us every 15 minutes while we watched the movie. Since we had "already had enough alone time because we went to dinner together." Ah, roommates...
In the end, everything worked out and 8 years later, I'm still glad I said, "Yes!" 💗
