Chewbacca Cake with Faux Fondant

David turned 7 in March! And at his request, I made him a Chewbacca cake. Don't worry, that's not real hair. Haha!

This was a chocolate cake with vanilla icing and caramel as the filling and iced with chocolate icing on the outside.

This cake started off rough... It was a box mix and crumbled worse than any other cake I've ever iced. Even more than the gluten free cake I made. It was honestly so crummy that the crumb coat looked like I had used oreo icing. No joke.

Thankfully, the technique I was using to finish the cake did a great job of hiding most of those imperfections and it still turned out fine! I just had to remember, if all else fails, at least it is still edible. Lol.

I used a 233 Wilton tip to pipe long strands of icing to make it look like Chewbacca fur. Not having the time to make a full thing of fondant (and not wanting the leftover fondant to sit in my fridge for a year before I finally remembered it and threw it away...) I decided to make a fake fondant by adding powdered sugar to the leftover chocolate buttercream icing until it thickened into a fondant like consistency. Not only was I able to use up the rest of my leftover icing, but it was also super quick and easy!

I'm not sure if this would work for covering an entire cake as it did crack a little, but for smaller decorations, it worked great!

After rolling out the faux fondant, I cut it with a butter knife and placed it on my cake. I then mixed a little bit of lemon extract with some silver luster dust and painted it onto some chocolate squares we had in our candy cupboard. (Do most people have a candy cupboard?... That's normal, right?)

I placed them on the fake fondant belt strap and it was done!

I'm so happy with how this cake turned out. It also reminded me to have patience and to keep moving forward. There was honestly a while where I just wanted to scrap the whole cake, but I made myself move forward because if I did quit, there would be no cake. And what's a birthday without dessert?!

And with that, I'll say one more Happy Birthday to my sweet Davey-Doo. I can't wait to see what kind of cake he wants next year!
