Since all of the schools are closed right now, he got to be home for his whole birthday! I was pretty chill about him doing his class work. Fridays are early days at his school and we're keeping it that way at home too for now.
It was a pretty slow morning but the fun really began when John came and picked David up for lunch. Originally, he was going to have lunch with him at his school, but with the changes including a happy meal from "Old McDonald's" (Yes, my kids still call it that. Haha!) there were no complaints.
My sister Julia came up to celebrate with us (which my kids always love) and she brought way more presents than I expected!
Once John got back home from work, we had macaroni and cheese along with spaghetti for dinner (David's choice). Then, David got to open his presents. He was super excited about a lot of the presents. He got binoculars from his Grandma and Grandpa Grimes that he can take camping since his old ones broke in half and became matching spyglasses. He also got some mini nerf guns, a lightsaber (which Aaron played with more than anyone), a train gingerbread kit (random, but that's what he wanted), and a few other small things.
He was most excited about a train toy we gave him. It was originally supposed to be a present for someone else but it didn't get used. David has been asking for it for a long time since he could see it in the closet with a bunch of other last minute gifts I have stashed in there.
He was the least excited about a jacket I bought him... The first thing he said when he saw it was, "clothes?..." In all honesty, I don't think he was too thrilled about that one... A little while later, once he looked at it a little more, he tried it on and ended up loving it and wearing it all weekend!
After presents, we had cake. At David's request, I had made a chocolate cake with vanilla icing and caramel in the middle and chocolate icing on the outside. I made it a Chewbacca cake and David loved it!
After playing with his presents for a little longer, we got the kids ready for bed and Julia sang songs to them with her ukulele. I gave David one more hug and "happy birthday" and he said, "That was a wonderful birthday. Thank you, Mommy."
That boy is so sweet! I hope he always stays that thoughtful and happy.
With all of the craziness and social distancing going on, we had to postpone his minecraft birthday party. He definitely took it better than I thought he would. Now, I just hope the homemade pinata lasts long enough and doesn't get gross by the time we can finally have his friend party...
With another year down, here are some of David's current favorites!
food: mac and cheese
color: blue
movie: Star Wars (he's only seen a small part of one of them...)
thing to do: play outside
treat: suckers
superhero: Spidermanboard game: Railroad Ink (we just borrowed it and played it last week)
David loves minecraft, star wars, and legos. He is still learning Chinese at his elementary school and loves it! He is a good friend and big brother and we are so happy he is a part of our family! I often come into a room to find him laughing with Aaron or Brooke about something or to see them just having fun playing together. He's a straight arrow and a great kid and we are so happy he's ours!
