March 2020

This month has been crazy.

It started off with daylight saving time (why is that still a thing??). It's honestly not too bad if you don't count how it messes up bedtime for our kids. Even in the fall when it would be nice to get an extra hour of sleep, our kids are now officially waking us up at 6 am instead of 7...

The end of that week had Friday the 13th and the official closure of all public schools here in Utah because of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Because of all this and the order for social distancing, we had to postpone David's birthday party.

As if that wasn't enough, there was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake 30 minutes from our house. Everything was fine, but it was the first time any of us had felt an earthquake. The kids did pretty well with it, but all the aftershocks we've been having have worried David a bit. The weird thing is that in the moment, you don't know if the earthquake is going to get worse or better. It kind of turns into 20 seconds of "how scared should I be?" Haha!

I was hoping that everyone would calm down after a week or so and we could finally buy toilet paper and soap in the store again without feeling judged... That is, if you can find any! To be honest, I would just be happy if they had 1% milk again. Or even if they only restocked the chocolate milk so I had a good excuse to exclusively drink that for a week. Lol.

Unfortunately, with the small earthquake, a lot of people freaked out and swarmed the stores again.

As a side note, the earthquake knocked the trumpet off of the angel Moroni on the Salt Lake Temple. A few days later, it was announced that all of the missionaries that were serving in a foreign country would be returning to their home country...

Haha! Not only all of that, but now, we're officially home schooling until school gets reopened. Even with the teachers sending us the work for the kids to do online, it still takes a decent amount of one on one just to help David and to keep him on task. I'm really glad I only have one kid in school right now!

On a more positive note, here are 6 good things that came out of this...

1. We actually had time and motivation to plant a garden this year. (Is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of people are suddenly taking up gardening as a hobby?...) We have done one in the past but decided not to plant one while John was doing his masters program. Mostly because he was gone at class a lot and I wouldn't water it enough...

2. I can finally try that "spending freeze week" I've been wanting to do! I basically just have to stay off online shopping and I'm all good since we're staying home most of the week anyway.

3. Memes. This is a random one, but there are so many hilarious jokes going around social media right now. I'm glad people are still finding reasons to laugh and smile through all of this craziness.

4. My mom is home. I used to call my mom all the time to visit, but I haven't been able to since she started working outside of the home again. Even though I could call her in the evenings, or on the weekends, that's usually when everyone at my house is home and things get too busy. Since she works in a school district, she is home right now and I can call her during the day again! Hopefully she considers that a plus too... Haha!

5. We have more time to spend together. In all fairness, we spend a decent amount of time as a family already, but now, we're forced to spend it at home doing things together rather than running errands, or spending it apart at meetings or other things.

6. Homeschooling. This one goes back and forth on my list. (It seems like the week has started very on task, but we'll see how it ends.) So far, I have tried to keep David's schedule similar to the one he has at school, which has worked well. It has also given me extra time with him to go over things he has forgotten (like memorizing his address) and small things he can learn that he doesn't learn at school (like how to snap and whistle). Overall, it hasn't been a bad experience.

In the end, I don't think this will all be over at the end of March, but who knows. The only thing I would like to do that I can't at this point is go to the thrift store, specifically to look for a new kitchen table. Our house is definitely lacking in a good earthquake "cover" place. I'm pretty sure those aren't as high on most people's shopping lists as toilet paper right now, so hopefully, we can find a good one! Lol.
