Checkerboard Cake

Once upon a time, I made a checkerboard cake....

This was one of the first cakes I made that John took to work when I decided I wanted to get better at cake decorating.

It had been a skill I wanted to learn since I decorated my first cake for a church activity as a little 13 year old. And I finally had the time to develop it!

Not only did this cake turn out better than I thought it would, but it was also a lot easier than I thought it would be!

Just a few simple steps and it was done!

I was so happy with how this cake had turned out, but I was also surprised. Learning to make cakes has shown me that while developing a new talent can sometimes take a little bit of born skill, a lot of it is also just reading, learning, practicing...

This makes me hopeful for other skills I want to get better at. You know... nunchuck skills, computer hacking skills... Haha! (Couldn't resist the Napoleon Dynamite reference!)

In all seriousness though, it seems that lots of talents can be developed just through hard work.

And I know I am nowhere near perfect at it. I still have the occasional cake fail where I debate on scrapping the whole thing and turning the entire mess into a giant display of cake pops. Lol. But in the end, practice makes perfect. Or at least, practice makes better.

Hopefully, I can translate this lesson to other skills... like patience.

For now, I'll keep working on it. And definitely keep hugging my cute kiddos every day.

And if anyone wants to send me some boondoggle key chains, I (or at least Brookie) won't turn them down. ;)
