Usually when we plan a camping trip there, people hear we're going to Vernal and just reply with "why?" or "huh, ok..."
No offense to Vernal. They just aren't usually on anyone's "top ten places to visit" list. Even with that said, we have been three different times and have loved each trip there!
This year, John took a Friday off work and we headed up that morning.
On our way up we did a short slot canyon. We ended up not going very far though because it got muddy and swampy after a while...
Then, we did the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum. It was fun, but with little kids, we went through the whole thing twice pretty quickly. Afterwards, we went to a park for a bit before heading to our campsite.
That night, we set up our tent and made chili dogs and smores for dinner over the campfire. We then let the kids watch Raya in the tent while we all went to bed. They hadn't seen it yet and it was fun to have a camping movie night!
On Saturday, we did a short walk to two caves, a nature trail to a beaver dam, and then spent a few hours getting roasted and playing in the water at Red Fleet State Park.
We set up our tent at the lake to try to help block the sun which worked a little bit. Next time, we will try to remember to bring sunscreen... It seems to be the one thing we always forget on our camping trips. Oops!
Since this was just a short trip, we headed back home Saturday night.
In our past trips, we've done the dinosaur wall of bones and hike as well as a hike to the lake with dinosaur tracks and a different cave hike than we did this time. I think next time, John may try some of the mountain biking trails... Either way, this definitely wasn't our last trip to Vernal, UT! Until next time, Dinosaur land!
