For a fun free date night a little while back, John and I decided to visit some of the little free libraries around us. What was originally going to just be the two of us, ended up being our whole family when we couldn't find a babysitter...
No problem though! Our would be date night just turned into a family fun night yet again. Plus, it got my kids a little more excited about reading again, so that was great!
For anyone that's never heard of these "little free libraries", they're usually what looks like a mix between a bird house and a kitchen cupboard and they are filled with books. The thing about these community library boxes are that they're completely free! And not in the "unless you have late fees or book damage" kind of way.
The way they work is that anyone can come and donate books, or take books depending on what they want to do. There is even a website where you can look up a map of registered book boxes. Although there are a lot on this list, I have found that there are some in our area that aren't actually on the map! Bonus! Haha!
Well, for this date night, I went through all of our books at home and pulled out all of the ones I was okay parting with. Some of them we got as gifts and weren't too keen on, some we had duplicates of, and some we weren't really reading very often.
My goal for this book exchange was to leave as many as we take. So for each box, we'd decide how many we wanted to take, and then we tried to replace them with similar types of books.
We ended up with a lot of great books! Including the next book we needed in the Harry Potter series that David is reading. We also got a couple of books for John and I to read together while on road trips.
All in all, it was a fun date night/family fun night and a great way to find books I might not normally consider reading at first. We will definitely be doing this again on those long summer days when the kids want to do something different and fun!
