Recently, I posted about a
piñata John and I made for Kevin and Christine for their wedding. (If you haven't seen it yet,
check it out. It was a lot of fun to make!)
Well, along with that, I really wanted to make something for them that used a phrase from their song... Or at least a song that is significant to them.
The phrase I decided to use was "with the dust of the stars in her eyes" from the song in the Broadway version of Cinderella called "Ten Minutes Ago". I changed "her" to "our" so it fit a little more for both of them rather than just for her.
I debated on a few other quotes from the song but since I decided to make a key holder, I though "ten minutes ago" might sound weird... and "over mountain and meadow and glen" just brought pictures to my mind of the sound of music...
To make the key holder, I sanded the old paint off of the plaque and dusted it off. I then stained the wood with the same stain I used on my aunt's
retirement sign.
After writing the words out on the plaque with a pencil, I used a white paint pen over the pencil markings.
Here it is before the glitter and hooks... and glue smudges... more on that in a minute.
After covering "dust of the stars" in glitter, I left it to dry while I went to a dentist appointment. When I came home, I found a thin layer of liquid kids glue smeared all over the top of the plaque. I thought I scrubbed all of it off, but after spraying a clear sealant over the plaque a bunch of weird spots showed up where the glue had dried all the way without me knowing it. At that point there was nothing I could do with the amount of time I had left, so I screwed in the hooks and the picture hangers and called it good. Honestly, it will still work fine and in certain lighting, they probably won't even notice the dried glue on it... fingers crossed.
Well, it's not perfect, but I'm happy with how it turned out. Except for the glue smudges, but that's just life as a mom, I guess. At least David will be able to say that he helped Mommy with her project, which I'm sure is all he was trying to do anyway.
