DIY Spice Rack

Here we go again with trying to organize the house! One place in the house that has been in desperate need of help is the spice cabinet. Even in our old apartment, this section of the kitchen was a little messy... but now, we have even more random bottles of flavorings and herbs... Which means, the cabinet is an even bigger mess.

At first, we tried to organize them in a box. It worked well for quite a while, but I got tired of all the "guess and check" while looking for spices at cooking time. Even writing the name of the spice on the bottle's lid didn't help much and felt like there was a lot of wasted space as well.

After looking up some different ideas, I decided to make some sort of shelving in the cupboard. It just so happened to work out that I still had quite a bit of wood left from one of the pallets John and I got last summer!

After measuring out the wood and cutting it, I sanded it all down and stained it using the same stain I used for the key holder project and the retirement sign.

Once the stain was set, I nailed the wood together and put it in our cupboard.

I made sure that the bottom level was tall enough for the average size of most of my spice bottles, and then just found what else I had that would fit on the top shelf. Also, I decided to make two of these racks so I could fit more on them. I plan on leaving the back spice rack in the cupboard, while the front one I can take out when I need to. Because of this, I decided to nail some elastic to the the front one so the bottles wouldn't fall out when I moved the rack.

In reality, it only saved a little bit of space by letting me stack things up, but it also made it a lot easier for me to see the spices I need. Plus, it sort of forced me organize the cabinet a lot better. Turns out we have quite a few partly used bags of baking chips... So, I'm off to make cookies! Haha! And, thanks to this spice rack, finding the right spices for cooking will be a little faster from now on!
