Cars Birthday Party

This was the first year David had a friend birthday party! He was super excited... Aaand, I may have been just as excited for him as he was... seeing as we started talking about it at least a month ahead. At the same time though, this was his first one, so maybe all moms plan it that early... I'm still figuring it all out! Haha!

David decided he wanted a "Lightning McQueen" themed party, so we planned it around that.

First, I made some "tires" out of plates, with black paper glued to them and drawn on with silver marker. The kids tried to throw these onto the cones.

The next game we planned was "Pin the teeth on Mater". Rather than buy the stuff for the game (since month ahead planning turned into 2 days ahead preparing), I decided to draw my own Mater! I thought it turned out pretty good! (Thank you college drawing class! Haha!)

After the kids played these games, they each got a box to decorate as a car with stickers and markers. They then got to park their cars for a "drive in movie" and watched a couple of "Mater's Tall Tales". (Cute little Brookie saw that everyone was sitting in a box and wanted her own! Haha!)

Just before we turned on the show, we sang Happy Birthday to David and the kids got to raid the food table!

Surprisingly, just the night before, I had been thinking that the party didn't seem super Cars movie themed, but that it would still be fun so it was fine. Then, as I was getting it ready the morning of, I realized it fit way better than I thought!

Tire toss game: The Cozy Cone
Pin the teeth on Mater: Mater... obviously.
Decorating the "cars" with markers and stickers: Ramone and a little bit of Lizzie (the crazy grandma car that sells souvenirs and bumper stickers)
Oreos: Luigi's Casa Della Tires
Apple juice boxes: Flo's V8 Cafe (or Fillmore's homemade stuff, if you prefer...)
Strawberries (a few were cut into roses): Red's flower pot
And of course, a car shaped cake.

I actually hadn't planned the oreos and strawberries to match up until I was getting them ready to put on the table and an epiphany struck. So, I made some super quick labels to go with them. (Oh, and I forgot to mention how great the "road" table cloth was! Just a black dollar store table cloth with white strips of paper taped to it. Can't get much easier than that.)

Also, funny thing about the cake... I was planning on making cupcakes for David's party, but being pretty busy and a little tired, aaand since we still had more than half a cake left from our family celebration of his birthday, I decided to cut part of the cake out and re-ice it a little to make it into a car. Once again, this worked better than I thought it would.

Overall, the kids had a lot of fun! And David got to have his first birthday party with friends! So it was a great way to end the week.

    1. Haha! Yeah, luckily I found that one in her closet! It was too small for the other kids, but she fit perfectly!
