First, we had a scavenger hunt for John's birthday last weekend. We don't usually do a big extended family party, but John's turning 30 this year, and that seemed like a bigger birthday to me so I wanted to plan something fun for him!
Overall, the scavenger hunt went great! Danny, Bethany, Kevin, and Christine ended up winning thanks to Bethany's expert knowledge of store locations at the mall. After the scavenger hunt, we ate root beer cupcakes and went to a restaurant called "Pizza Studio" which is basically like Subway but with pizza. I think the pizza afterwards was the best part for John actually! And to be honest, it was really good pizza... Haha!
For the 4th of July, John got to come home from work early on Tuesday! We went to the park with the kids and then ran to the store to get a few things for the next day.
Then, on Wednesday, we went to a church pancake breakfast at 8 (a little too early for a holiday in my opinion...) and then packed sack lunches to take on a hike. We ended up doing a small hike to a little waterfall and to see some petroglyphs. The kids did great and we had a lot of fun!
Once we got home, we had a squirt gun/water balloon fight and threw poppers with the kids. Afterwards, we had hamburgers and fries for dinner (how could you not on the 4th of July?!) and watched "The Peanuts Movie" (which was actually waaay better than we originally thought it would be the first time we watched it... seriously, it's a cute movie and we like it a lot) and then we lit sparklers and watched any fireworks we could see in the sky.
So yeah... we didn't actually buy any big fireworks ourselves this year. Our neighbor does a bunch every year and invites anyone in the neighborhood that wants to to come with a snack to share... We just didn't know this year that for like the first time, they weren't doing it... Also, since we celebrate the 24th of July with fireworks too in Utah, missing fireworks on the 4th isn't a huge deal since we'll be lighting more in 2 weeks anyway.
(Just a side note... we took a lot of videos with our video camera so no photos of the 4th this year. Oops!)
Moving on to Friday for John's birthday...
We were planning on having tacos for John's birthday dinner (a big change from David's hootenanny birthday dinner in March, lol.) but since we had leftover hamburgers, pineapple, and pizza from dinners this week, John said he'd rather just have those and we'd make tacos the next day, which was fine with me!
After dinner, we gave John his presents and had him blow out candles on a lemon cookie cake! Except that we only had 5 candles left in the house so he ended up getting 1 per century. Haha! We then played board games with the kids and watched a TV show after they went to bed. So, it was kinda a chill birthday which was what John wanted anyway :)
The rest of this month has another birthday (mine), scout camp, 2 mission send offs, and pioneer day coming up! And just like that, July turned into a much busier month than I thought it would be...
