Girls Dress into Shirt and Skirt

A while ago I was perusing clearance racks at Walmart. Sometimes, you can find some great stuff! And sometimes, not so great...

This particular week, I happened to find a dress in Brooke's next size up (Yes. I usually stock up on kids clothes before they need/fit them). Not only was this dress pretty inexpensive, but it was also pretty cute!

After seeing it in the store, I had the idea to change it into a skirt and shirt! It could be worn with so many more outfits if it was two pieces instead of one. And of course, she could always wear them together still too!

This transformation was one of the easiest sewing projects I've done.

First, I took out the seam that held the skirt and the shirt together.

I got rid of any loose threads on the fabric and sewed a zigzag stitch over the top to prevent fraying. Then, I sewed a basting stitch along the top of the skirt (Basically just sewing one long line without back-stitching).

Next, I cut an elastic band long enough that it would fit around my daughter's waist as a 4 year old  (with a seam allowance) and sewed it together to make the new waistband. (I sewed the ends of the elastic down similar to how I did the waistband on the Jenny Skirt)

After pulling the thread of the basting stitch to gather the skirt, I made sure it was evenly gathered and the right length before I pinned it to the elastic waistband.

I then sewed them together and cut the loose threads.

All I had left to do was to re-hem the bottom of the shirt and it was done!

This was a super quick project and I'm happy with how it turned out! I can't wait for her to be big enough to wear it!
