Also like from what I've heard from most people... it was great!
This year, David wanted to be the Mandalorian. Aaron is too little to really pick his costume yet, so it was the perfect time to dress him up like baby yoda! John threw on his old Jedi robe from his scout camp working days and the boys were set!
Brooke, as always, wanted to be a princess (Cinderella this year) so I was the Fairy Godmother to go along with her.
For the David's armor, we used cereal boxes, hot glue, and silver metallic spray paint. The helmet was a little more work. I debated on buying him one but at $40 for a piece of a costume and $35 for half of a helmet, I decided to make my own. I saw someone that made one out of cardboard (and nylons for the black part) so I gave it my best shot.
I think it turned out great!
For Aaron's costume, I found a girl's coat that looked to be for a 10-12 year old (it was from the thrift store and there was no size tag on it). I cut it up and sewed it to fit Aaron. I also had to take off the old collar and add a new one to get that sort of asymmetrical square look. The yoda hat I made out of green felt.
Aaron loved trying on the coat before it was cut up, but he got tired of it pretty quick when I kept having to put it on him to measure parts of it! In the end, he did exactly what I thought he would. He went outside long enough to realize it was cold and then quickly put on his costume! Lol.
Brooke's costume was easy since it came out of her closet and we just had to find her a tiara and gloves.
For my fairy godmother costume, I found a skirt with a lining in it at the thrift store that I decided to use. It only had enough material to sew a jacket, but being 4 months pregnant, I'm not sure adding a large skirt to it would look very good right now anyway.
In the end, the jacket was the hardest to make. By sewing it, I learned how to sew a hood, add a ribbon tie, and how to add a lining to a coat for the first time! I definitely grew a lot in my sewing skills and although it's not perfect, it's definitely good enough to wear again! We'll see how many years Brooke wants to be a princess. Haha!
To celebrate Halloween this year, John's sister Jenny wanted to throw a Halloween party! We had soup, homemade rootbeer, cake, cookies, and treats at John's mom's house and then played a bunch of fun Halloween games and carved pumpkins. David won the kid's donut eating (he's the oldest) and also won a caramel apple in the balloon pop game. Even when using both feet, John couldn't pop his for some reason! Haha!
On Halloween night, John took the kids around. He said they only went up to doors that had their porch lights on or pumpkins lit and still 1/3 of them didn't answer... I stayed home and passed out candy with a mask and my fairy wand taped to a pair of tongs that I used to pass out the candy. The kids had a lot of fun and have definitely been loving the treats!
On Monday, we took the pumpkins to a pumpkin drive for Pony Haven. They will give each child a (very) short pony ride for each (carved or uncarved) pumpkin donated for the ponies to eat. This is the first time we've heard about this and I'm glad we went. Brooke and David both got to donate their pumpkins and had fun riding the ponies! Plus, we felt like our pumpkins were put to much better use given to animals to eat rather than thrown away in the trash after a week.
Looks like we've found a new after Halloween tradition!
