Spring Break at Home 2021

When kids are bored, they usually either make a mess, argue, or get into some kind of trouble. At least that's how it ends up in our house. With that in mind, I knew I had to have something planned for each day of Spring Break last week. And with me being 2 weeks away from my due date with our fourth child, I needed some easier mostly at home activities.

Monday - Science Day!

For the first day, we stayed home and did some easy science experiments.

First, we did the "Skittle Rainbow" experiment. Other than it looking pretty cool, the kids liked eating the skittles afterwards. Haha! Also, if the water isn't warm enough, it takes a lot longer for the colors to dissolve from the skittles. We remembered that from doing this a year ago and used much warmer water this time!

Next, we did "Walking Water" which actually took over night for the colors to change.

After lunch, we did the "DIY Raincloud" experiment. We didn't have shaving cream and used hair mousse instead which still worked. It took a few minutes for the food coloring to actually drop through (and we ran out of blue dye from the walking water experiment!), but the kids still had fun watching it!

The last experiment we did was the "Burning Candle in Water" Experiment. It took a few tries to do this one. We put too much water on the plate the first time but it worked when we had less.

Overall, the kids liked the burning candle one the most. Except for Aaron... I'm pretty sure he liked the skittles one just because he got to eat them! Haha!

Tuesday - Gnomeo and Juliet!

We had a movie day Tuesday and I literally only picked the movie Gnomeo and Juliet because it was one of the only ones on Disney+ that I knew my kids hadn't seen, it would keep their attention, and it had been long enough that I wouldn't be too bored watching it either. Mom reasoning and motivation right there. Lol.

To go along with the theme, we had blue foods for breakfast. I made french toast using whole wheat sandwich bread and adding sprinkles on top before flipping the toast over. Just for future reference, I tried two kinds of sprinkles. The pure sugar crystal ones and the waxy thicker ones. I will definitely use the crystal ones if I do this again in the future as the waxy ones melted and didn't look that great...

For lunch we had red foods. Keeping it easy, we just had peperoni pizza. I forgot to buy strawberries, but that will just be my secret as the kids didn't know so they didn't actually miss them.

After lunch, we watched the movie and then ate red, white, and blue popsicles! We also did a color lego race to see who could collect the most blue or red legos in a minute. The one thing we didn't end up doing was make gnome hats... Maybe next time.

Wednesday - Firetruck Day

After looking around for new things to do, it turns out there's a firetruck park not too far from John's work! And the best part? It's fenced! So, if John couldn't come at the last second, there'd be no worrying about the road or trying to run after Aaron when it was time to go (which I definitely cannot do right now...).

We started the day having hot chocolate with breakfast! Or I should say for breakfast. Once the kids drank it all, they were too full for cereal. Lol. That worked out fine though because then they actually ate their Kid's Meals at lunch! Haha! It's always a bummer to buy them kids meals and then see them only eat one chicken nugget and a few fries... Those darn toys are just too distracting! Haha!

After grabbing some food and picking up John, we went to the park. The kids had a lot of fun with Daddy chasing them and putting them in the "jail" when they got caught. And it was better that it was a smaller park since it made it a lot easier to keep an eye on them. Also, having it right next to the fire station meant the kids got to see a firetruck as it was heading back to the station which was fun.

Once we got back home, I had to head off to a doctor's appointment while the kids stayed home with a babysitter, so that was pretty much all we did that day.

Thursday - April Fool's Day!

Originally for Thursday, we were going to have lunch with John at a different park, but work was too busy, so we stayed home. As far as April Fools Day pranks go, I did get the kids in the morning by switching the cereal bags into different boxes. David just sat there confused for a second. Haha! The only other pranks we did were small kid ones where we made jello in cups so it looked like juice for dinner and pretended there were worms in the apples by putting gummy worms in them. I honestly don't want the kids getting too into this holiday in case they come up with pranks that are so not funny... But small, silly ones aren't bad.

In the end, since our original plans fell through and I was too tired to take the kids to the park alone, the day ended up with a lot of kids whining, fighting and yelling. It sort of calmed down before dinner for a bit when I made straw rockets with the kids but then we all got cranky again by bedtime.

And this is why I had to have things planned for each day. Purely for survival purposes. Lol.

Friday - Library and Movie Day

On Friday, we went to the library to pick up the Lego Movie 2. None of us have seen it yet and David has really been wanting to watch it after seeing some of it at his aunt's house.

Our short trip to the library ended up being a lot longer when the kids wanted to do the scavenger hunt the librarian made. It was fun, but honestly, I was getting pretty tired of walking all over the library and trying to keep Aaron from running away.

We stopped by the dollar store on our way home for a few things and the kids each picked one toy out to bring home.

After John got home, we watched the movie we picked up from the library. It was fun for the kids, but I honestly think the first one was better...

And that was our Spring Break week!

Even though we didn't go anywhere this year, the kids still had fun and with a little bit of planning, we all made it through without going crazy. Haha!
